Pushing the limits of both genre and musicality, Brooklyn’s Cousin Earth delivers catchy tunes with a progressive spirit. Featuring both an original repertoire and a vast array of covers, the band delivers a wide tonal palette that has as much a sense of humor as it does a sense of purpose. From shredding ukulele solos and 4-part vocal breakdowns to interweaving themed medleys, Cousin Earth is sure to catch the attention of any music lover. Presenting a multitude of styles including Rock, Funk, Ragtime, Latin, Bluegrass, Hip Hop, and even electronica, no musical style is off-limits for this otherworldly live act.

Cousin Earth (originally called Ukulelien) was formed in 2013 by Joey Calfa and Nate Searing. The two met while playing in a Frank Zappa cover band in college called the Mothers of Intention. Before founding Cousin Earth, Calfa and Searing went on to play together in the progressive jam band Mercury Landing. It was from this group that they recruited Tara Lawton, Corey J. Feldman, and Terry Brennan to join the band. Melissa Goscinski took over for Lawton on vocals in 2018.

Having played over 300 shows throughout the Northeastern United States, Cousin Earth has built their fan base from the ground up. From Maine to North Carolina, the band has played with notable acts including Melvin Seals and the Jerry Garcia Band, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, the Werks, Aqueous, Future Folk, Andy Frasco, Rustic Overtones, and many more. The group has also cultivated a strong internet following through their engaging videos and consistent attention to fans. With over a million cumulative views from Youtube and Facebook videos, the band brings in thousands of visitors from around the world every month. Their music video for “Universoul” is in Hard Rock Café’s video library and can be seen at locations across the globe. Always striving to be creative in providing the best experience for their followers, “Color-Me-In” t-shirts, choreographed dance moves, and a tap-dancing / light-saber wielding dinosaur mascot are just some things you can expect from these Cousin Earthlings.

On November 20th 2015, Cousin Earth released a self-titled debut EP on all major platforms. To follow up their EP, the group released a full-length album entitled “Human Music” on April 27th, 2018. This release fully embodies the intricate musicality, sense of humor, and tight vocal harmonies that have become a staple of their live act.

“Cousin Earth blew my socks off last time I saw them in DC. They released their newest album, “Human Music” this week and it is all at once masterful, funky, and fun. Their on-stage presence is infectious”Nina Goodman DC Music Review

“they are a special experience due to the eccentric and original style and flair, including unique time signatures and song structure … Cousin Earth is an ascending band that one should watch and expect great things from in the immediate future.” Chadbyrne R. Dickens Live For Live Music

LowDown Brass Band (LDB), deftly synthesizes the gritty sounds of Chicago with the high energy street beat of the Crescent City. LDB brandishes a powerful brass frontline of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, with a funky backline of drums and sousaphone. Combining the poetic ferocity of Billa Camp with stellar vocal harmonies, adventurous improvisation, movement, and grooves, LDB creates an infectious and diverse sound that has something for every listener.

Fresh off their headlining set at The 2018 Montreal Jazz Festival, LowDown maintains a constant performing and touring schedule throughout North America. Recent performances include the Lagunitas Beer Circus, Chicago Jazz Fest, Frendly Gathering, Alaska’s Salmon Fest, Chicago’s Do-Division Fest, Wakarusa, Cotai Jazz Fest, and a annual residency at Shoe Fest.

Following an ambitious project titled LowDown Sounds, that included a critically acclaimed cameo by Roy Ayers on the track Everybody Loves The Sunshine, LowDown Brass Band is now touring their 2018 hip hop release titled LowDown Breaks featuring MC Billa Camp. This new record steps deeper into refining their unique sound, combining hip hop breaks with live soul samples and deep cut grooves.

“Not exactly Slipknot, but not exactly John Philip Sousa either. What it is, exactly, is AWESOME!”
– Chicago Sun Times

There’s a reason why performers as distinct as Dumpstaphunk and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon would want to perform with the Lowdown Brass Band on tracks such as “Ghost Town,” the first listen selection form the ensemble’s latest project LowDown Breaks. The LowDown Brass Band hits hard with a horn section that can harmonize when playing in unison, while also the individuals possess the chops to step out on their own. That horn section is backed by drums that play funk and hip-hop – all in that classic New Orleans shuffle march style. That instrumental talent is on display on “Ghost Town,” a track where the band confirms what other instrumental hip-hop groups such as The Roots have made obvious for years – that musicians can match the most skilled MC.”
-Howard Dukes – Chicago Sun Times

Night after night at their live shows, Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal leave it all on the table, bringing crowds palpably authentic music. This is a real working band; music for the people, by the people. You hear the veracity in Hoyer’s voice. You hear the strife of a guitar amp being pushed to its limits. You hear keyboards hammering notes home while emboldened horns soar over the top of a rhythm section akin to a freight train. The raucous funk and smooth soul emanating from the stage dutifully pays homage to the past soul giants while simultaneously charging forward, piloting themselves into the modern era. This is soul music.

Hoyer formed Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal in 2012 in famed blues town Lincoln, Nebraska. The award-winning five-piece band includes some of the area’s most revered and accomplished musicians. Joining Hoyer (keyboards/vocals) is Blake DeForest (trumpet), Mike Keeling (bass), Benjamin Kushner (guitar), and Larell Ware (drums). Inspired by the sounds of Stax, Motown, Muscle Shoals, New Orleans, Philly and San Francisco, the band continuously crosses musical boundaries both in style and era, and joins forces each show with a common goal – to have the crowd dancing so much they forget even their smallest troubles.

On January 26th, 2018, Hoyer released The End of the Night, a 3-song EP and solo side project with veteran Nashville songwriters Jay Knowles (Harry Connick Jr, Blake Shelton), and Jon Coleman (Trace Adkins). In the spring of 2018, Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal recorded their fourth full length record, Do It Now, which was released in Europe in August 2018, concurrent with a 35-city tour spanning 7 countries. Do It Now is slated for a US release on January 18th, 2019.

In 2017, Josh was featured as a contestant on NBC’s The Voice, and the band completed their first European tour; a 27-city stint capped with a live album release from their show in Brussels, Belgium. The hard working band completed several national tours from 2015-2017, playing more than 150 shows in 32 states each year, including opening for George Clinton, Charles Bradley, Booker T Jones, and Muscle Shoals Revue. Their year-round touring schedule took them from coast to coast, including several major summer music festivals.

In 2016, the magic of their live show caught the attention of producer Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo), who joined with the band to record their third full-length album. Running From Love, was recorded at Nashville’s historic Sound Emporium, and once again features Hoyer’s trademark vocals and the band’s signature groove. The album was released on April 8, 2016, on Silver Street Records, and is available on vinyl, CD, and digital formats.

“If James Brown and Otis Redding had a love child, it would be Josh Hoyer. The Lincoln, Nebraska, soul shouter, and his band of merry soulsters, Soul Colossal, deliver a sound so big, so funky, so wring-the-sweat-out-of-you energetic that it reaches through the speakers and shakes you until you start moving to its groove.” – No Depression

Lord Nelson has won many fans over the last several years with their spirited live performances and serious musical chops. Those fans should raise a glass, because they’re about to get their ears blown off with the new full-length album Through the Night, set for a late spring release. The album possesses a depth of sound that can only come from the frequent addition of piano, organ, and horns to guitar-based rock. This set of songs, written on the road and between tours, explores dark themes of relationships, the political climate of the country, and what it means to spend your days in a van, traveling the highways of America.

Musically, the songs don’t hesitate to dive deep into grooves, peeling off that outer layer of song craft to illustrate a wide palate. With haunting guitars, a driving rhythm section, and big chorus’, this album represents a thin coat of finish on a hard worn sound. The lead-off single “Tail Lights” grapples with the joys and challenges of the road for those on it and those left at home. Other standout tracks include the powerful “Second Chances,” the zeitgeist commentary of “Southern Discomfort” and “Safety Meeting.” A moment of levity with the swamp tinged “Good Time” provides a snapshot into the simple pleasures.

Produced over the last year by Dave Stipe (Rockfish Music) at Monkeyclaus Studio in Nelson County, VA, the record has a full, Rock’n’Roll identity, heavily laced with Americana and Soul. Whether it’s a fat horn section under a slide guitar riff, propelling it powerfully forward, or a harmony vocal giving the song an extra dimension, the album illustrates the power of a band bringing lyric driven songs to full expression. As anyone who has seen their live show will tell you, while there are several excellent solos and impressive individual moments, the thing that gets you – the thing that keeps you coming back – is that full sound. Sonically, the band is greater than the sum of its parts, in the best possible way.

The unified musicianship of the band serves as a solid home base for the searching lyrics of lead singer and guitarist Kai Crowe-Getty. In addition, the band’s multi-instrumentalist, Henry Jones, takes a break from keys and trombone to jump on the mic for a few tracks, bringing an R&B urgency. The current lineup includes Jones’s brother Calloway on lead guitar, Andrew Hollifield on bass, and Johnny Stubblefield behind the sticks. With a full tour of the east coast and points west in the works, this is a band in command of their sound, bringing strong songs in hard times to towns across the country. Keep your head up.
